LARGE-SCALE CLINICAL TRIAL IN A COMMERCIAL HEALTH PLAN SETTING.

This randomized, prospective study to demonstrate the value of our CareEngine clinical decision support technology was conducted by ActiveHealth Management. The study population consisted of 39,462 members of Midwestern managed care plan age 12-64 with at least 1 claim in the prior year. It was published as a peer-reviewed article in The American Journal of Managed Care.

Across the study population:

46 potentially serious medical errors identified per 1,000 people – nearly 1 for every 20 members.

8.4% fewer hospitalizations.

$8.07 per member per month saved.

CareEngine® SystemOverview

INCREMENTAL VALUE OF MEMBER MESSAGING.

CareEngine Care Considerations were initially only sent to physicians (physician messaging). In 2006, ActiveHealth started communicating Care Considerations to members (member messaging). This study compared overall change in compliance with Care Considerations in two large groups of members - a Control Group that received only physician messaging during the study, and a Study Group that received both physician and member messaging during the study.

The study showed:

Overall increase: Controlling for age, sex and Care Consideration type, the addition of member messaging increased compliance by 12.7%.

Study group results: Care Consideration compliance increased from 29.0% to 31.0%.

Control group results: Care Consideration compliance decreased from 30.0% to 28.9%.

INCREMENTAL VALUE OF DISEASE MANAGEMENT NURSE ENGAGEMENT.

This study was conducted by ActiveHealth Management over the first year of the Active Disease Management program. The study covered management of 20 conditions for over 200,000 members of 5 employer-sponsored health plans. Its focus was the incremental clinical value of disease management nurse engagement. The study was published in Disease Management.

The study showed:

ICM participants generated an additional 80% more Care Considerations per member, based on data they supplied.

20.9% increase in compliance with Care Considerations.

Informed Care Management

FIRST-YEAR SAVINGS OF $3.10 PMPM.

This study involved a large-scale commercial population of 200,000 members. The purpose of the study was to demonstrate the incremental value of our disease management program, in addition to savings from CareEngine. The results were based on a comparison of members meeting criteria for disease management interventions and members not meeting criteria for disease management interventions. Cost savings were determined by comparing the cost of the members meeting the criteria after application of the program to their predicted costs if there hadn't been an intervention.

The study showed*:

A 2.1% point decrease in the cost trend in members meeting criteria for disease management interventions.

Covered charges were $3.10 PMPM lower across the entire population.

* Our methodology was vetted by an independent consulting group and is consistent with the 2006 DMAA measurement guidelines.
